This foundational training on treating emetophobia will help attendees learn about what emetophobia is, but also what it is not, so workshop attendees will also learn how to differentiate emetophobia from other similar disorders like obsessive-compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and illness anxiety disorder. The workshop's main focus will be on teaching attendees how to harness the incredible curative power of exposure therapy to help emetophobic clients reduce their suffering. As a foundational training, we will review concepts of Emotional Processing Theory and Inhibitory Learning Theory that are critical to understanding how emetophobia develops, is maintained, and can be treated using exposure based treatment principles. The bulk of the workshop will focus on how to use three main types of exposure therapy to successfully treat the vast majority of emetophobic case presentations: in vivo exposure, imaginal exposure, and interoceptive exposure. While exposure based interventions form the core of treatment, we also review the necessary treatment components of safety behavior elimination and processing exposures with clients. Combining effective exposures with safety behavior elimination and processing will provide you with the tools you need to give your emetophobic clients a pathway out of their overwhelming anxiety. In support of lecture materials, a recovering emetophobic will share her treatment story with workshop participants to better bring to life these powerful elements of exposure therapy. As such, workshop attendees can use the information provided in this workshop to effectively ameliorate the symptoms of this devastating phobia.
